Scenarios, Mainstreaming and Monitoring of Multilateral Environmental Agreements

IISD is collaborating with CARICOM and UNEP to integrate management of environmental resources into government planning and monitoring systems and curricula at the high school and university levels.

Countries actively participate in multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs), and most of them have signed and ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), the Cartagena Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment in the Wider Caribbean Region, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Work in the international environmental arena is becoming increasingly focused on implementation by addressing gaps and promoting synergies among MEAs and development priorities, rather than on the development of landmark agreements.

The aim of this project is to increase the skills of future policy-makers to address these issues in their jobs. The project is based on needs identified during the series of capacity-building workshops on management of environmental resources conducted by IISD in the region. Since 2011 over 100 policy-makers have participated.
